Step 1: Measure Your Deck or Patio to Determine How Much Tile You Need
-
Gather Your Tools
-
Tape measure
-
Calculator
-
Notepad and pen (or use a phone to take notes)
-
-
Measure the Length and Width
-
If the area is a simple rectangle or square:
-
Measure the length and width in feet.
-
Multiply the length by the width to get the total square footage.
-
Example: If your deck is 10 feet long and 8 feet wide, the total square footage is 10 × 8 = 80 sq. ft.
-
-
If the area is an irregular shape, break it into smaller rectangular sections, measure each section separately, and then add them together.
-
-
Account for Extra Tiles (Waste Factor)
-
Add an additional 10-15% to the total square footage to cover cuts, breakage, and future repairs.
-
Example: If your total area is 80 sq. ft., adding 10% extra means you should order 88 sq. ft. of tile.
